FOLKANTINA
Folkantina were born around summer 2009 from the stubbor singer Filippo, who, searching for a guitarist which had his same passion for Nomadi, De Andrè, Guccini, met Michele: their first inspiration will then be focused on a completely different genre, Folk.
Then they find Stefano, an already well-knowned percussionist in the Reggea scene, which, in spite of his inexperience in the Folk genre, decides finally to join the band, taking with him the influences of the Bandabardò.
Around the band “fixed stars” pass then different characters: Simone Giorgini, Riccardo Trasselli and Gabriele Baldini to the bass, Carlo Baldassari to the accordion and Francesco Pascucci to the flute, which will leave their mark in the Folkantina.
So, what arise on the stage is motley group with a motley wealth of experiences, that go from Celtic Folk to popular music, from Rock to Metal, from Pop, passing through Funky, to classical music.
To Filippo’s voice, Michele’s guitar and Stefano’s percussions joined then: Valerio Mori to the drum, Stefano Accorroni to the guitar and Andrea to the violin, and so Emanuele to the accordion, Federico Pesco to the bass and Giacomo to the flute.
With the complete orchestra, these “Innkeepers of Folk” begin their musical journey: after taking part in cultural events, concerts and festivals, after playing in different locals, roads and squares, Folkantina become a band as close as a few. The Cuarteto del Angel’s studies and research are moving towards a Piazzollian discipline: that is, to give life to a passionate and elaborate type of music, a mixture of styles which open new horizons for an aesthetic enjoyment.
The group goes back through the most significant moments of Piazzolla’s musical career, with a repertoire of the Argentinian composer’s well-known tunes and of his lesser-known work, respecting, but at the same time personalising, with an incredible and renewed passion, the universal message left to us by the composer, by accompanying us sweetly and feverishly towards that extraordinary and overwhelming revolution of sentiment, exploring completely the musical plot of the whole group of instruments (bandoneon, violin, piano and double-bass), in pursuit of a rythmical language, a highly drammatical and passionate spirit and vivid colours, which are the same elements which inspired Piazzolla himself to create “nearly” classical compositions in their structure and performance.

FRANK PETRILLI
Frank Petrilli was born and lives in Los Angeles California. Frank started playing the accordion at age 7, and by age 16 he was playing professionally. As the popularity of the accordion declined in the U.S., Frank switched to playing Hammond B3 Organ and saxophone for about 15 years until 2006 when he returned to the accordion. With his return to the accordion, Frank started playing with the César Mateus Latin Jazz Band at many jazz venues throughout the Los Angeles area.
In late 2006, Frank began intensive study with the great jazz accordionist, Frank Marocco which quickly evolved into a very close friendship. By studying with Frank Marocco and via their close relationship that lasted over 5 years, Frank Petrilli became Frank Marocco’s protégé. Frank Marocco often commented that Frank Petrilli was like the son he never had as they connected with music and on many other personal levels too. Unfortunately, this relationship ended earlier this year with Frank Marocco’s passing on March 3rd, 2012.
Through the relationship and mentorship with Frank Marocco, Frank Petrilli’s playing vastly improved and he began performing more in the Los Angeles area with artists such as guitarists’ Patrick Barrogain and John Chiodini at top venues such as the Vibrato Jazz Club. Frank has also performed at many of the major accordion festivals and clubs in the U.S. including the AAA Festival in Charleston 2011, and at the San Francisco Accordion Club on numerous occasions.

The name of this debut album is “Totally Frank” and includes the playing of three fine Italian musicians; Felice Del Gaudio, Max Ferri, and Fabio Zeppetella.
In this CD you will hear the influences of Frank Marocco for certain. However, Frank Petrilli plays his own style which includes more focus on Latin grooves. As the booking agent and artistic director of Vibrato Jazz Club, Pat Sentator wrote, “Like his mentor, Petrilli gives new life to the accordion with impeccable phrasing and a smooth, fluid style.” You will enjoy the musical stylings of Frank Petrilli’s accordion both in concert and in his recording “Totally Frank,” and expect some very good music coming from Frank Petrilli in the future.

AUDITORIUM

CRISTIANO LUI & STEFANO CIOTOLA
I don’t know if in other human manifestation is the same, but there is no purity in music. There has never been. Every phenomenon is the result of meetings, commixtures and no judicious pairing at all. And actually every tradition – which is sold off as something very solid – is a slow and constant transformation of shapes, sounds, colors and attitudes.
And those two instruments (accordion, bandoneon and guitar) which vibrate in the hands of Cristiano Lui and Stefano Ciotola are necessarily “impures”. These instruments can be recognized in a lot of different styles, several genres and repertories. – As happens in music, as happens in life – the guys almost came across together throughout a kind of metaphorical journey, departing from shared passions but touching so many places and tastes.
The story tells us about the bal musette and also about the meeting with the chromatic accordion through Italian immigrants who settled in Bastille and Faubourg Saint-Antoine neighborhoods of Paris, between ‘800 and ‘900; it talks about the mixing of foreign dances like polka, tango and rumba and about the the need of a new kind of ball like the java; about the success earned by the very first little jazz orchestras and above all it make us know about the vitality of persons like Django Reinhardt (a Belgian gypsy guitar player) who will draw big inspiration from the accordion player of the time.
The path of Cristiano Lui and Stefano Ciotola take shape from these elements and predilections. And it is a path ideally drawn as a kind of journey in the subway of Paris which is often the scene of unrehearsed concerts of varied artists.
Then, Paris has always hosted artists from all over the world without any hesitation, “making them Parisian”, adopting them, but also preserving every kind of personal and intrinsic quality.

MAREA
The Marea group was founded in 2006 by Andrea Dessì (guitar) and Massimo Tagliata (accordion), who are presenting their 5th album. Their aim is the expression of music through the contamination of genres: accordion brings the soft world of tango and folk music, while guitar suggests strong influences of flamenco and classical music but the common jazz experience unify them and play a key role as there are long parts dedicated to improvisation and also to those genres that move away from classical jazz.
They mostly draw inspiration from Paco de Lucia, Vincente Amigo, Astor Piazzolla and some grat classical composer: Ravel, Debussy and some more. But there are also some quotations from rock music among which Jimy Hendrix, Pink Floid, and also from Mediterranean music as Mikis Theodorakis. It is a very wide music world that live on many suggestions and leave the soloists express freely.
Their absolutely original “Blue Andalusia Tango e Flamenco” is dedicated to tango and folk music and to famous Italian and international accordionists.

JOHANNA JUHOLA & MILLA VILJAMAA DUO
Johanna Juhola and Milla Viljamaa play tango nuevo with the attitude of an urban folk musician. Their co-operation began in 2001 at the Folk Music Department of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland, where they both study at. The repertoire of the Duo consists mainly of the compositions of Juhola, Viljamaa and the Argentinian tango composer Astor Piazzolla.
In their original style of arranging and playing are combined the influences of the tango nuevo, jazz and the folk music styles of different countries with improvisation and variation. Their debut album Piazzolla Passage (Warner Music Finlandia Records 2002) has been warmly welcomed by the media and listeners.
Beginning from the year 2002 the Duo has worked with a famous Finnish singer Kukka-Maaria Ahonen in the Las Chicas del Tango Trio. The Duo Milla Viljamaa & Johanna Juhola received a precious recognition of their work by winning the 1st prize of the International Astor Piazzolla Competition (Citta di Castelfidardo Award, Astor Piazzolla Music Section) in Italy 2002.
JOHANNA JUHOLA

Juhola is a young accordion player and composer who is busily blowing off the last of the dust of past generations from her instrument.
Juhola first gained recognition in the early 2000s with two first prizes in Astor Piazzolla competitions: with the Novjaro Quintet at the International Astor Piazzolla Competition in 2000, and in a duo with Milla Viljamaa in the Astor Piazzolla category of the international accordion competition at Castelfidardo. At the Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki in 2007, she performed her Fantasiatango, commissioned for the occasion, for a TV audience of millions.
Tango nuevo is one of Johanna Juhola’s greatest passions, although she has no trouble skipping from one genre to another. She may be described simply as a musician, with no categorisation or pigeon-holing. However, tradition plays an important role in her musical identity.
Her tango ensembles, apart from the aforementioned prize-winning ones, include Las Chicas del Tango (with pianist Milla Viljamaa and Finnish tango competition laureate Kukka-Maaria Ahonen). Tango orchestra Unto, which also features a distinguished lineup (including Timo Alakotila, Mauno Järvelä and Pirjo Aittomäki), performs evergreen Finnish tangos in new arrangements, drawing on the diverse backgrounds of its members.
The Finnish folk music tradition maintains a strong presence in Juhola’s ensembles Troka and Spontaani Vire [the name translates literally as ‘spontaneous tuning’]; improvisation is a key element in the latter. She takes a more experimental approach in her self-named ensembles, the Johanna Juhola Trio and Johanna Juhola Reaktori; in both of these, electronics is an important component. And as if this were not enough, she also plays music that defies all description with violin virtuoso Pekka Kuusisto; this inventive and acclaimed duo goes by the name of Kraft.
Pianist and harmonium player Timo Alakotila is an important duo partner for Juhola, particularly in exploring the improvisation potential of traditional pelimanni music. She has also recorded Timo Alakotila’s Concerto for free-bass accordion and chamber orchestra and performed it with various ensembles.
Due to her unprejudiced approach, Juhola is in demand as a guest artist. Recently she appeared on the hip-hop disc Records Are Forever (2009) of the Don Johnson Big Band.
She remains faithful to her own style whatever the genre, though. Instead of adapting or changing how she plays her instrument, she listens to her partners and reacts to them, improvising and living along with the music.
Johanna and her music usually go together. She rarely plays music by other people, and she does not usually write music for others, either. One of the rare exceptions is the concerto by Timo Alakotila referred to above. But her interests also include the stage.Theatre and circus are dear to her, and she has written music for a number of productions. Her music is always to some degree visual and playful, and it suits a circus performance down to the ground.
Instead of confining herself to the accordion, Juhola has fun with playing a wide range of instruments, and rather unconventional ones at that: she may use a claviola, a melodica or a Japanese mini-grand piano in both solo and ensemble work.
For all her playfulness, however, Juhola is a serious musician who is rapidly advancing to the premier league of accordion players internationally. Her charismatic performances and joy of making music captivate viewers and listeners wherever she goes. Indeed, she has sometimes stolen the show in performances where she is merely part of the ensemble. So the buttons and bellows have come full circle, and now it is Johanna who excites listeners and colleagues.
Johanna Juhola performs as quartet (Reaktori ensemble), as trio and as soloist (also in orchestras).

DUO MILLEMIGLIA
Two musicians motivated by the same desire to experiment in proposing their own musical instruments in a new look, had met and in 2003 gave birth to the Duo MilleMiglia, composed by the harp of Elena Manuela Casentino and by the accordion of Mario Milani: amazing formation in the international musical survey.
The aim is that of mixing sonority and different styles in a modern contest, joining both tradition and innovation and embracing varied forms and musical genres.
Each arrangement is original, based on the pursuit of a dinstinctive sound which draws the listener into a space full of suggestions: a journey through remote lands and times.
The particular combination of their two instruments recalls unique atmospheres and images that cast us in an adventurous and endless world, evoked even by their name: Duo MilleMiglia.

Mario Milani, accordion
